Travel Guide Surabaya, the capital of province East Java, boasts as one of the largest cities in Southeast Asia and the second largest city of Indonesia. Formerly known as Soerabaja, it is located on the northern shore of eastern Java, that is at the mouth of Mas River (Kali Mas) and the side of Straits of Madura. As one of the busiest ports in the country, Surabaya?s main exports are sugar, tobacco and coffee. It is also a getaway city for Mount Bromo and the island of Bali. Surabaya has a population of about three million, consisting of mostly Javanese people, Madurese from Madura Island and Chinese Indonesian. Most of the people speak a unique Javanese dialect, called Surabayan, which is well known for its directness in speech.
