Destination Guide Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, is a charming yet relaxed township. Formerly known as Jesselton, most major parts of Kota Kinabalu were destroyed during World War II and have since been reconstructed. The Kota Kinabalu town is separated into two, with the north eastern area being referred to as “Old KK”. This is due to the fact that this area of the town has managed to survive World War II whereas the rest of the city was ruined. The post war reconstruction of Kota Kinabalu town has resulted in a unique blend of various architectural influences on its buildings. You can see European architectural influences on its shop houses, and Malay and Chinese influences among its modern structures. The reconstruction of the town has also resulted in traditional markets being sandwiched in between sky scrappers and shopping malls. Kota Kinabalu is very scenic and a favourite destination for adventure seekers, nature lovers, water sports enthusiasts, holiday makers and even business executives. Locally referred to as KK, Kota Kinabalu must not be missed on a trip around Malaysia.
