Destination Guide Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is located on the southern part of Myanmar. It is also the largest city in the country and boasts a population of over 4 million. Yangon is located at the confluence of the Yangon and Bago rivers. Yangon was the capital of Burma since World War II, however in 2006, the military junta has began relocation of the capital to Naypyidaw, which is located in Mandalay division. Development in Yangon is scarce if compared with other major cities in Asia. Nevertheless, with the entry of foreign investments, construction of residential and commercial buildings is flourishing. Yangon is made up of 32 townships and are divided into four major districts – Western, Eastern, Southern and Northern. This former capital oozes cosmopolitan charm, boasts multiethnic residents and serves as the economic hub of the country. Even so, Yangon still exudes the elegance of Rangoon’s colonial days and features numerous buildings with British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian influences, glittering gold stupas and breathtaking scenery. Amidst all these, you can find saffron-robed monks and longyi clad men and women wondering the streets of Yangon.
